How to Check Your RAM Speed, Timings and Type (Task Manager and CPU-Z)

How to Check Your RAM Speed, Timings and Type (Task Manager and CPU-Z)

You can check your RAM type and speed in Windows Task Manager in under a minute. For timings such as CAS latency (CL), you need a free tool called CPU-Z. This guide shows both methods step by step, and explains how to read the numbers so you know whether your computer RAM is running as it should.

What do RAM speed, timings and type mean?

Type is the generation of your memory: DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5. Speed is how fast the RAM transfers data, measured in MT/s (often loosely called MHz). Timings are small delay values, written like 16-18-18-38, that show how many clock cycles the RAM needs to respond. You need all three to buy compatible RAM, to confirm an upgrade worked, or to find out why your PC feels slower than expected.

How to check RAM speed and type in Task Manager?

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Click the Performance tab, then select Memory in the left panel.
  3. Look at the top right corner. It shows your RAM type, such as DDR4 or DDR5.
  4. Scroll down to the details below the graph. Check Speed, Slots used and Form factor.

Speed shows the running speed of your RAM (for example, 3200 or 4800). Slots used tells you how many memory slots are filled out of the total. Form factor tells you whether you have DIMM (desktop RAM) or SODIMM (laptop RAM) modules, which is important when buying laptop RAM. Task Manager does not show timings, so move to CPU-Z for that.

How to check RAM timings with CPU-Z?

Download CPU-Z from the official CPUID website, install it and open the app. Two tabs matter here.

Memory tab: This shows what your RAM is doing right now. Type gives DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5. Size is the total capacity. Channel # shows Single or Dual. DRAM Frequency is the current clock speed. Below that, you will see CAS# Latency (CL), RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRCD), RAS# Precharge (tRP) and Cycle Time (tRAS). Together, these are your RAM timings.

SPD tab: Pick a slot from the drop-down to see details of each stick, including the module size, manufacturer, part number and a table of supported speeds and timings. This tab shows what the module is rated for, while the Memory tab shows what it is actually running at.

How to read the CPU-Z numbers correctly?

CPU-Z shows DRAM Frequency, which is half of the effective speed. Multiply it by 2 to get the MT/s figure. For example, a DRAM Frequency of 1600 MHz means DDR4-3200, and 2800 MHz means DDR5-5600.

For timings, a lower CL is better only when compared at the same speed. To compare properly, use this formula: real latency in nanoseconds = CL × 2000 ÷ MT/s. DDR4-3200 CL16 gives 10 ns. DDR5-6000 CL30 also gives 10 ns. So a DDR5 kit with a higher CL number can still match DDR4 latency because its speed is higher. For a deeper explanation, read our guide on CAS Latency (CL)? RAM Timings Explained.

Why does my RAM show a lower speed than advertised?

This is the most common surprise after checking. There are four usual reasons:

  • XMP or EXPO is off. RAM runs at a safe default speed until you enable its rated profile in the BIOS.
  • Single channel. One stick runs in a single channel, which cuts memory bandwidth. Two matching sticks in the correct slots run in a dual channel.
  • Mixed modules. When sticks of different speeds are installed together, all of them run at the slowest speed.
  • Hardware limits. Your CPU or motherboard may not support the full speed of the RAM.

If CPU-Z shows Single under Channel # even though you have two sticks, check your motherboard manual for the right slots.

What should you check before buying new RAM?

Use the details you just collected. Match the type first, because DDR4 RAM and DDR5 RAM are not interchangeable and will not fit the same slot. Then match the form factor: DIMM for desktops and SODIMM for laptops, so a DDR4 laptop RAM module will not fit a desktop board. Finally, check how many slots are free and the maximum capacity your system supports.

Not sure how much capacity you need? See our comparison of 8GB vs 16GB RAM. If you are shopping, browse the RAM collection and pick the type and form factor you found in your own system.

FAQs

Does Task Manager show RAM timings?

No. Task Manager shows type, speed, slots used and form factor only. Use CPU-Z to see CL, tRCD, tRP and tRAS.

Is CPU-Z safe to use?

Yes, CPU-Z is a read-only monitoring tool. Download it only from the official CPUID website.

What is the difference between MHz and MT/s for RAM?

MT/s is the effective data rate, while MHz is the actual clock. DDR RAM transfers data twice per clock, so 1600 MHz equals 3200 MT/s.

Why does CPU-Z show a lower RAM speed than the label on my stick?

The rated speed usually needs XMP or EXPO enabled in the BIOS. Without it, RAM runs at a lower default speed.

Can I check my laptop RAM type the same way?

Yes. Task Manager and CPU-Z work the same on laptops. Check the form factor for SODIMM before buying.
