Laptop RAM (SODIMM) and desktop RAM (DIMM) do the same job, but they are built differently. SODIMM is the smaller module made for laptops, and DIMM is the full-size module made for desktop PCs. They are not interchangeable. The slot, the pin count and the DDR generation must all match your device.
This guide covers the key differences, the pin counts for DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5, and how to pick the right computer RAM for your device from the Foxin range.

Desktop RAM is called DIMM (Dual In-line Memory Module). Most desktop modules, including Foxin’s, are UDIMM, which means unbuffered DIMM. Some listings also call them long-DIMM. SODIMM stands for Small Outline DIMM.
What Is Pin Count?
Pin count is the number of gold contact pins along the edge of a RAM module. These pins connect the module to the memory slot. Each RAM type has its own pin count, so a module only fits a slot built for that exact count. Always check the pin count before you buy.
Pin Count by DDR Generation
|
Generation |
Desktop (DIMM / UDIMM) |
Laptop (SODIMM) |
|
240-pin |
204-pin |
|
|
288-pin |
260-pin |
|
|
288-pin |
262-pin |
Desktop modules have more pins because they are physically larger. DDR4 and DDR5 desktop modules are both 288-pin, yet they do not fit each other’s slots. Every module has a notch on its bottom edge, and the notch position is different for each DDR generation. Laptops work the same way: a DDR4 SODIMM (260-pin) will not fit a DDR5 SODIMM (262-pin) slot.
Can You Use Laptop RAM in a Desktop?
No. A SODIMM is smaller and has a different pin count, so it does not fit a desktop DIMM slot. The reverse is also true: desktop RAM does not fit a laptop. You also need the right generation. DDR3 RAM, DDR4 RAM and DDR5 RAM are not compatible with each other.
Speed and Performance: Is Laptop RAM Slower?
The form factor does not decide speed. The same generation at the same rated speed gives similar performance. Foxin DDR5 RAM runs at 5600MHz in both desktop and laptop versions, and Foxin DDR4 RAM reaches 3200MHz in both. Two things do differ by generation. Voltage drops from 1.2V on DDR4 to 1.1V on DDR5. Foxin’s DDR3 laptop RAM is DDR3L, a 1.35V low-voltage design, which suits battery use.
Installing SODIMM vs DIMM
Both are simple upgrades, but the method differs. For a desktop, open the side panel, align the notch and press the module down until the clips lock. For a laptop, open the back panel, insert the SODIMM at about a 30° angle and press it down until the side clips latch. Before buying laptop RAM, confirm that your laptop has a free SODIMM slot, because some laptops have soldered memory that cannot be upgraded. If you want dual channel in a laptop, you need two slots.
How to Check Which RAM Your Device Needs
- Find the model: Search your motherboard or laptop model on the manufacturer’s website.
- Check the memory type: Look for “Memory Type: DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5” and whether it uses DIMM or SODIMM.
- Check the slots: Confirm there is a free slot and that the memory is not soldered.

Laptop with DDR5 |
DDR5 SODIMM, 262-pin |
8GB or 16GB 5600MHz |
For capacity, 8GB RAM is enough for everyday use and office work. 16GB RAM suits gaming, editing and heavy multitasking. Our guide on 8GB vs 16GB RAM covers the choice in detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use laptop RAM in a desktop?
No. SODIMM is smaller and has a different pin count, so it does not fit a desktop DIMM slot.
Can I use desktop RAM in a laptop?
No. A desktop DIMM is too large for a laptop slot. Buy SODIMM RAM for your laptop instead.
Is SODIMM slower than DIMM?
Not because of its size. Speed depends on the DDR generation and the rated speed, such as 3200MHz for DDR4 or 5600MHz for DDR5.
How do I know if my laptop uses DDR4 or DDR5?
Search your laptop model on the manufacturer’s website and look for “Memory Type” in the specifications.
Can soldered laptop memory be upgraded?
No. If the memory is soldered to the board, it cannot be replaced or expanded. Check that your laptop has a free SODIMM slot before you buy.
Final Verdict
Buy DIMM (UDIMM) for a desktop and SODIMM for a laptop, and match the DDR generation to your device. Check the pin count and slot before you order.
Foxin DDR3 and DDR4 RAM come with a 10-year warranty, DDR5 RAM comes with a 5-year warranty, and every module is factory-tested. Browse DDR3 RAM, DDR4 RAM, DDR5 RAM or all Foxin RAM to find the right module.
